BUSINESS LONELINESS

Business loneliness can happen when a leader feels that they have no one to talk to about the pressure, decisions, setbacks, financial challenges, or uncertainty that come with running an organization.

Common experiences include:

  • Feeling like you must always be strong for everyone else

  • Having difficult decisions that only you can make

  • Feeling isolated even while constantly surrounded by people

  • Carrying financial and operational pressures privately

  • Struggling to find people who understand your journey

  • Experiencing burnout from always being “the one in charge”

  • Feeling unable to celebrate successes because you're already focused on the next challenge

For nonprofit leaders, this can be especially difficult because the mission may be deeply personal, while resources are often limited.

Who Supports the Person and Team Behind the Organization?”

“Who supports the people who are always supporting everyone else?”

Organizational wellness is connected to community wellness. If the people doing the work are exhausted, isolated, and emotionally depleted, eventually the organization feels it too.

Burnout is not a sign that someone doesn't care. Sometimes it is a sign that they have cared for too long without receiving enough care themselves.
